Double elimination pickleball brackets
A second chance for every team, and a fairer path to the title. It costs roughly twice the matches of a single knockout.

How does double elimination work in pickleball?
In double elimination, a team is out of the tournament only after its second loss. Everyone starts in the winners' bracket. A first loss sends a team to the losers' bracket, also called the back draw. The winners of both brackets meet in the grand final. If the losers' bracket team wins it, both teams have one loss and a deciding match is played.

The structure
- Winners' bracket: a normal knockout. Nobody here has lost yet.
- Losers' bracket: teams with one loss. Losing here ends a team's tournament.
- Grand final: the winners' bracket champion against the losers' bracket champion.
- Bracket reset: if the losers' bracket champion wins the grand final, a second, deciding match is played because both teams now have one loss.
How many matches double elimination needs
Every team except the champion loses twice, and the champion loses at most once. That gives 2 x teams - 2 matches, plus one more if the grand final is reset. A 16-team division needs 30 or 31 matches, roughly twice a single elimination bracket.
Scheduling a double elimination bracket
Losers' bracket rounds depend on winners' bracket results, so the two brackets have to be scheduled in step. Keep the grand final and a possible reset on the same court, and plan time for the reset even if it is not needed. See tournament scheduling.
Frequently asked questions
How many matches are in a 16-team double elimination bracket?
Thirty, or 31 if the grand final is reset.
What is a bracket reset?
If the team from the losers' bracket wins the grand final, both teams have one loss, so a second, deciding match is played.
Is double elimination better than pool play?
It gives every team at least two matches and rewards consistency, but pool play usually guarantees more matches per team for a similar number of total matches.
