Pickleball tournament formats

The format decides how many matches a division needs, how long it takes and how many games every team is guaranteed. Here is how the common formats compare.

What are the main pickleball tournament formats?

The main pickleball tournament formats are single elimination (one loss and you are out), double elimination (out after two losses), round robin (everyone in a group plays everyone), pool play into a knockout (small round robin pools, then a bracket) and the 3-game guarantee (every team plays at least three matches). Pool play into a knockout is the most common choice for mid-sized divisions.

Pool figures assume each pool of four plays six matches and the top two advance into an eight-team bracket. Double elimination needs one extra match when the team from the losers' bracket wins the first grand final.

Single elimination

A knockout bracket where every loss ends a team's tournament. It needs the fewest matches, one fewer than the number of teams, but half the field plays only once. Details: single elimination.

Double elimination

A first loss drops a team into the losers' bracket, and a second loss ends its day. Everyone plays at least twice, and one bad match does not decide a division. Details: double elimination.

Round robin

Everyone in a group plays everyone else, and standings decide the winner. It gives the most games, but the match count grows quickly with group size. Details: round robin.

Pool play into a knockout

The field is split into small round robin pools, and the top finishers cross into a knockout bracket. A round robin into knockout works the same way with one or two larger groups. Details: pool play.

3-game guarantee

Every team is guaranteed at least three matches. Teams that lose early keep playing in consolation rounds instead of going home, and the leading teams play on for the title. It gives players more play for their entry fee without the match count of a full round robin.

Custom multi-stage formats

Larger events sometimes stack stages: pools, then a knockout, then playoffs for places. In SkorX TMS the custom builder runs pools or groups and then a knockout, with your own stage names, table points and ranking order.

How to choose a tournament format

  1. Know your court time

Courts multiplied by hours for the division, minus a buffer.

  2. Count matches for each format

Use the table above or a planner to compare total matches.

  3. Check the minimum per team

Decide how many matches a paying player should be guaranteed.

  4. Pick the best fit

The format that gives the most play and still finishes on time.

  5. Publish the rules with the draw

Format, game length, tie-breakers and advancement.

Common format mistakes

  • Choosing a single large round robin for a one-day event.
  • Running single elimination for a field that paid to play several matches.
  • Forgetting the extra grand final match in double elimination.
  • Not deciding how many teams advance from pools before the event.
