Pickleball pool play into a knockout

The most popular format for mid-sized divisions: guaranteed matches in the pools, then a bracket that produces a clear winner.

How does pool play work in a pickleball tournament?

In pool play, a division is split into small round robin groups, usually of four or five teams, and every team plays everyone in its pool. The top finishers in each pool, often the top two, then advance to a single elimination bracket. Pool play guarantees every team several matches and still finishes with a clear winner in a predictable time.

How pool play is structured

  1. Split the division into pools with snake seeding.
  2. Each pool plays a round robin.
  3. Standings and tie-breakers decide who advances.
  4. Advancing teams are placed into a knockout bracket, with pool winners seeded above runners-up.
  5. The knockout runs as a single elimination bracket.

Pools of four are the sweet spot for one-day events: three guaranteed matches and six matches per pool. Pools of five give four matches each but raise a pool's match count from 6 to 10.

Placing pool finishers into the bracket

Cross the pools so that teams from the same pool do not meet again until late in the knockout. A common layout is A1 v B2, B1 v A2, C1 v D2 and D1 v C2 for eight advancing teams. When best third-placed teams advance, rank them across pools by the same tie-breakers.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams advance from pool play?

Usually the top two from each pool. Some events also advance the best third-placed teams to fill the bracket.

Four teams. Every team gets three matches and each pool needs only six.

How is pool play different from round robin?

Pool play is several small round robins followed by a knockout. A plain round robin is a single group with no bracket.
